about
the boiler upgrade scheme (BUS)
what is it?
The
Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a financial incentive to aid the
decarbonisation of buildings by encouraging people to replace (or in the
case of self-builders install straight away) existing fossil fuel
systems with low carbon heating systems.
As of Monday 23 October 2023, the government will provide £7,500 to overcome the upfront costs of
installing either an air-source heat pump, a biomass boiler or a ground-source heat pump under the scheme.
who's it for?
The scheme is open to properties that:
- are domestic or small non-domestic
- are located in England or Wales
- with a heating requirement of no more than 45kWth
- are a single property which is capable of
getting a domestic Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) . The EPC is the proof Ofgem
needs that the property is assessed as a domestic ‘dwelling‘. It gives information about
a property‘s energy use, plus recommendations on how to reduce energy and
save money. It‘s required every time you buy, sell or rent a property.
The new heating system must:
- be capable of meeting the full space heating and hot water requirements of the property
- replace an existing fossil fuel heating system (unless a self-build)
- meet certain technical standards, usch as minimum effiiciency requirements
- have been commissioned from April 2022 onwards.
how do you apply?
To
apply you will need to be the homeowner (or a self-builder) and have a
valid EPC with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall
insulation. The system must be correctly sized and fitted by a
Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited installer who will
also apply for the grant on your behalf after you have accepted their
quote. You will need to confirm the installer is acting on your behalf
when you are emailed by Ofgem.
You can get more information from the Government website.
